Parent Information

Dear TWC Parents:

I am excited to be serving your son or daughter as the Director of Career Development at Tennessee Wesleyan College. I wanted to take this opportunity to address a popular question from parents: “How do I help my son or daughter with their career concerns?”

Depending on what stage your sons and daughters are in their TWC college experience, they are no doubt concerned about what major they should choose or what they will do after graduation. As parents, you play an integral role in your student’s career development. The best way you can help is to listen to your child, encourage your child, and help them find information. Here are some tips help your student in this self-discovery process.

Encourage your son or daughter to visit the Career Development Center early. The Career Development Center can assist students with resume and cover letter writing, graduate school preparation, and job searching skills and techniques.

Emphasize the importance of being involved in student activities and taking on leadership roles. Employers look for active and involved students who have shown a proven track record of leadership skills.

Advise students to obtain valuable work experience preferably in their field of interest. Experience counts in this job market. Grades are not enough to secure a position in the workforce. Internships and summer employment are highly recommended for all students (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors).

Persuade your child to begin networking with individuals in their desired field. This will require students to begin researching their desired careers and gives them the opportunity to ask questions about their field. This can also lead to job shadowing opportunities.

If you have questions, I invite you to call the office at 423-746-5224 or email lsmith@twcnet.edu.

Sincerely,

Lynnette Smith
Director of Career Development
