Tennessee Wesleyan College will be co-sponsoring "Family Fun Day" on June 16.

Tennessee Wesleyan College will be co-sponsoring “Family Fun Day” on June 16. All proceeds from the event will go toward Madisonville residents Michael and Kim Byrum’s adoption expenses as they prepare to adopt their second child. The event will feature carnival-style games that will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on TWC’s Wesley Commons Lawn. Children and community members can play games at the event for both fun and the chance to win raffle tickets that go toward various prizes ranging from Six Flags and University of Tennessee football tickets to restaurant gift cards.

“We currently have over $2,000 in prizes,” said Kim, who adopted her first child Eli with her husband Michael two and a half years ago.

Michael, who works at Heil Trailer in Athens, and Kim, who works for Dr. Charles, Pesce, DDS in Athens, tried for 15 years to have a child before adopting Eli. When Kim and her husband began discussing the adoption of a second child, they brainstormed ideas for fundraising to help them with the adoption expenses.

“The idea for ‘Family Fun Day’ came to me one day when we were talking about fundraising,” said Kim, whose child will be adopted from Haiti. “My husband's biggest fear was we wouldn't have anyone donate prizes but people have been so generous and supportive it touches my heart. Family, friends and our church family at Glenlock Baptist Church in Sweetwater have come together to help us run this event.”

“Family Fun Day” has been designed to allow families and community members to participate in the games and events by buying a $20 card that gives them access to the games and raffles. Concessions will also be offered throughout the day.

“At the end of the day we will draw for all the prizes,” said Kim, who will also be selling t-shirts with her personal family slogan, “Love Knows No Borders.” “You don't have to be present to win. We are going to ask everyone to list their name and phone number on the raffle ticket.”

TWC is helping sponsor “Family Fun Day” by offering the venue location and providing maintenance items such as tables and chairs.

“There has been a wonderful response from the local community with an outreach of support,” said Ginger Murphy, who is Kim’s sister and TWC’s director of student activities.  “People have unselfishly and eagerly donated prizes and/or volunteered their time to help with the event.  As a TWC alum and staff member, I am excited and proud to lend our support to help make the event a success.”
