TWC education students get classroom experience
TWC education students have taken their learning out of a college classroom and into a kindergarten classroom.
Redefining the way that education majors learn to teach, Tennessee Wesleyan College’s Methods of Teaching Kindergarten fall semester students have taken their educations out of a college classroom and into a kindergarten classroom.
Every Monday and Wednesday TWC Education Majors Chelsey Woodcock, Tina Taylor, and Jordan Johnston visit Niota Elementary School where they spend time in Heather Malick’s kindergarten classroom. Malick, who is an alumna of Tennessee Wesleyan, has graciously allowed the TWC students to actively participate in her classroom’s activities.
“I came up with the idea to teach my Methods of Teaching Kindergarten students in an actual kindergarten class when I saw what a small class size I had this semester, “ said Dr. James Grubb, TWC associate professor of education.
“Teaching my class inside of a kindergarten classroom gives my students a real world experience instead of hypothetically discussing kindergarten teaching methods in a college classroom.”
Grubb’s three students are the first TWC education students to have the opportunity to have this classroom experience outside of the regularly scheduled student teaching that TWC education students do toward the end of their undergraduate studies.
“We have been working to increase our visibility with our partnering schools,” said Dr. Patricia Jones, TWC chair of the department of education and psychology. “This has been a wonderful way to achieve one of our departmental goals and the students really enjoy teaching in the classrooms with a TWC faculty member working in the class with them.”
