TWC alumni raise money for European choir tour

Two Tennessee Wesleyan College alumni have taken a special interest in helping raise money for the TWC choir to travel to Europe next summer where they will sing their way through Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic.
Cacky Wentworth-Johnson ’62 and Barbara Pickel Deal ’55 and ’57 are TWC choir alumni whose fond memories of their time at the college have inspired them to support today’s TWC choir students as they prepare to embark on their European tour.
Wentworth-Johnson recently spent days in the Tennessee Wesleyan library working with Senior Library Assistant Carlton Ealy, researching choir alumni from 1952 to 2011 to contact them about donating to help fund the TWC choir trip.
“I wanted to challenge TWC choir alumni to give back to their choir legacy,” said Wentworth-Johnson, who during her time at TWC was a choir accompanist under Jack Houts, Dr. Ronald Manley, Lynn McGill, and Darnell Chance.
Wentworth-Johnson and Deal contacted more than 430 alumni, challenging them to match Wentworth-Johnson and Deal’s individual $1,500 donations. Each student’s trip costs total $3,000, $1,500 of which the students will need to fund themselves.
In addition to appealing to alumni to donate, Wentworth-Johnson and Deal also put together a spring show review of choir alumni coming back to campus to sing songs from past TWC shows. The review will be held at TWC’s Homecoming on Saturday, October 5 at 4 p.m. in Townsend Auditorium. Admission is free to the community and attendees are invited to make donations to help fund the TWC choir’s European tour.
“A special thank you goes out to Cacky, Barbara, and Carlton for their passionate hard work in initiating and participating in this project,” said Randy Nelson, TWC vice president for advancement. “It is truly a gift to the college to have such dedicated and caring alumni.”
Along with Saturday’s spring show review, community members are also invited to the TWC Tour of Europe Dinner on Friday, October 4 at 5 p.m. on College Street. The cost of the dinner is $30 and all proceeds will help fund the TWC choir’s European tour. There will be live entertainment. Please RSVP to TWC’s Advancement Office by phone at 423-746-5330 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
