S101 Elementary Spanish I (3 credit hours)
This elementary level class offering serves as an introduction to basic Spanish. It is intended to provide students a glimpse into Spanish culture and its source of communication. This class concentrates on Mexican (with some South American) Spanish focusing on pronunciation, grammar, and acquiring vocabulary through oral and written exercises, conversation, easy reading material, and listening activities. Students are also exposed to cultural aspects of Spanish speaking countries and are expected to to research to present to the class on Spanish culture, history, food, art, music, literature, and movies. Both in-class games and activities incorporating interaction between students and out-of-class interviews with native speakers are included in this class.

S 102 Elementary Spanish II (3 credit hours)
This second semester of elementary Spanish offered on demand in the summer is a continuation of S 101. This class incorporates an exploration of Spanish culture and its source of communication with an on-gong study of the mechanics of the language. Students build on what they learned in first semester while continuing to shape their verbal skills with in-class oral and written exercises and by performing out-of-class interviews with native speakers.

S 104 Elementary Spanish I and II (6 credit hours)
This semi-intensive class offers one year of Spanish (6 semester hours) in one semester. It introduces the students to the Spanish language and its culture and presents tools for basic interpersonal communication skills. The focus is on grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation using verbal activities, written exercises, conversation, easy reading material, and interactions with the Spanish speaking community. This class concentrates on Mexican Spanish with glimpses of cultural and linguistic variations across Spanish speaking countries. This class meets in the fall for a two-hour block per session instead of the usual one-hour time frame.

S 204 Intermediate Spanish I and II (6 credit hours)
This second year class is the intermediate equivalent of S 104 in that if offers students a semi-intensive (6 credit hours) of Spanish in one semester. This course continues its intensive study of the Spanish language and culture while providing a systematic review of grammar with oral practice. Students in this class complete written compositions as well as listening, reading and viewing activities. They are also expected to interact with the local native Spanish speaking community using the skills and vocabulary practiced in class. Students also increase their awareness of Spanish culture, art, music, food, and history through out-of-class research and and in-class discussion of currents events.

S 301 Advanced Spanish Grammar and Conversation (3 credit hours)
The third year advanced class provides an in-depth study of grammar with an emphasis on verbal acuity. Students further their command of the Spanish language, including building vocabulary and deepening their knowledge of grammar through readings and associated activities including short compositions and in-class discussion. The reading and writing activities present students with topics for conversational practice, helping students enhance their verbal skills and offering opportunities to reinforce and review grammar points. This class is also the first semester required to obtain a minor in Spanish.

S 302 Advanced Spanish Readings (3 credit hours)
This second semester advanced class is required coursework for a minor in Spanish. This class is an introduction to Spanish-American literature. Students will read and discuss selections of contemporary writers from Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America. In addition to increasing their knowledge of contemporary Spanish-American literature students also gain a deeper understanding of current social, cultural, and political realities of life in Latin America.
