Materials needed to use this module are:

(1)   PC or MacIntosh computers.   PC’s should be Pentium II or later with Windows 95, 98, or 2000.

(2)   "PCMODEL" from Serena Software installed.

(3)   Internet connection to web site Inorganic Molecular Modeling

To build model, open PC Model 8.5 software.
  1.  Click on Draw.
  2.  Place your cursor in the center of the screen and click 3 times.
  3.  Go to View and click stick figure.
  4.  Go to PT (periodic table) and convert the center atom to atom of choice.
  5.  Click Draw and add additional bonds.
  6.  Go to PT and change carbon (light blue) bonds to a different element.
  7.  Click on H/AD to put in lone pairs.
  8.  Go to View, Ball & Stick.
  9.  Go to Compute, Minimize.
10.  Record the enthalpy of formation from the chart on the right.
11.  Determine bond angles  by clicking on the three atoms forming the angle in sequence and then click on a blank space
12.   Record the information in your notebook for both the practice problems and the experiment.  Some instructors may request the student to print the practice and experiment pages.
