DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT MICHAEL H. TRAVIS
Scripture: Ephesians 1:3-14
Sermon title: "What's The Plan?"
Michael H. Travis is the
district superintendent for the Cleveland district of the Holston Conference
of the United Methodist Church,
Travis graduated summa cum
laude from Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1975. He then went on to graduate
from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in 1978. While a
student, Travis served as a student pastor and was ordained an elder in the
United Methodist Church in 1979. He has served as the pastor of 17 churches.
A native of Knoxville,
Tennessee, Travis is a graduate of Carter High School. He worked in the
construction industry immediately following his high school graduation and
in 1964 he joined the United States Air Force. He received honorable
discharge from the USAF with the rank of sergeant in 1968 and continued his
work in construction until 1971 when he began attending Hiwassee College. He
graduated with honors from Hiwassee in 1973 and went on to earn his
bachelor’s degree from TWC.
In 2005, Travis was
appointed as the district superintendent of the Cleveland district. He
is
responsible for providing spiritual and administrative leadership to pastors
and their churches of varying sizes within the Cleveland area. Prior to his
appointment, he served as pastor at the Dublin Church in the Wytheville
District. He currently serves as an ex-officio member of the TWC Board of
Trustees and as a member of the chaplain approval committee for Sky Ridge
Medical Center in Cleveland.
Travis and his wife of 44
years, Teresa, have two children – Kymberly, a 1990 TWC alumna, and Andy –
and three grandchildren. They reside in Cleveland.
